Why the Holy Geek?
Everynow and then someone asks me why I started this blog and titled it the Holy Geek.
Do I think that I am more Holy or Geekier than others? No. In fact in many spaces when I walk in a room of my religious colleagues they know much more about the faith than I do. Likewise when I am in a room with friends who make a living in Technology as IT professional they know more than I do.
It is only when I am standing in both worlds at the same time that I feel comfortable talking.
Then I heard a speech from Will Wheaton and it reminded me of what it means to be a Holy Geek. Will was asked by a mother to explain to her unborn child, why being a nerd is awesome.
The video of the speech is below, but there is one quote in particular that sticks with me.
So there’s gonna be a thing in your life that you love. And I don’t know what it’s gonna be. It might be sports, it might be science, it might be reading, it might be fashion design, it might be building things, it might be telling stories or getting pictures. It doesn’t matter what it is. The way you love that, and the way that you find other people who love it the way you do is what makes being a nerd awesome.
Now I am a Star Wars Geek.
I am a Doctor Who Geek.
I am a Tortoise Geek.
These are all things that I love. I always am trying to share them with others. I love being around people who share these same loves. I make time in my life to interact with these things and sacrifice other things to do just that. I not just that you love these things. It’s how you love them.
Let me explain. You may find yourself enjoying an episode of Dr. Who. You may find it funny. It might be the kid of show that you will watch if there is nothing else on. I however watch an episode the night it comes out then immediately rewatch it to see what I missed. I have eaten fish sticks and custard. When I first go to London, I predict there will be more pictures of me next to blue Police Phone Boxes then there will be pictures next to my family.
This brings me to why I am a Holy Geek. I love the Church and Holy things. I really believe in trying to share them with everyone I know. I love being around people who love Holy things and the church also. I make time in my life to go to church, to pray, and to try and live out my Baptismal Covenant. My favorite restaurant is a church potluck.
I believe we need more Holy Geeks. We need more church “Fanboys” and “FanGirls”. People who don’t just love their church but share that church with everyone. We used to call those people evangelists, right.
Our clergy have been the only ones playing church “cosplay” and maybe it’s time to share that excitement.
I am first and foremost a Holy Geek.
